It really does speak for the state of the world at present, and how so much journalism really has devolved into sensationalism and race-baiting/smear-jobs, even in such a market as metal music which you'd think would be as far removed from this nonsense as possible. Just a couple things I think I'd like to comment on.

I definitely don't care for the attitudes and themes boasted by those in the NSBM scene, or any sort of band that preaches or otherwise glorifies this kind of stuff, which is precisely why I simply don't give them the time of day (that and the music usually sounds like total shit IMO). I agree that fascism needs to be stamped out of modern society, however I cannot condone the methods being taken these days to do so, such as trying to shut down events, whether we're talking about those concerts you mentioned or speeches by people whose views we may find objectionable. I say let these bands produce this music, allow guys like the above mentioned Richard Spencer to continue to speak their views, and let people consider their messages for themselves. It's understandable to not have a whole lot of faith in humanity these days, but taking vigilante measures as Antifa does is in essence saying to the public at large: "These thoughts and views are not for you to hear, lest you be swayed by them and suddenly become a bigot. We will decide what you can and cannot be exposed to, because we are so much more righteous and intellectual than a lowly commoner like you." It's very patronizing when you stop and think about it, to automatically assume that the average person is so stupid that they'd become a raging racist merely from listening to some music or a speech, that we have no moral compass or general understanding of right and wrong. It's actually not too far removed from how the religious Right went on and on for ages about how listening to rock/metal will turn you satanic.

Making a huge spectacle and classifying such things as "forbidden" or "morally reprehensible" only serves to pique people's curiosity in the end, like browbeating a child to not say certain words, or go somewhere you don't approve of, or read something you think they shouldn't. They're going to want to see what it's all about, because you've made the temptation of that forbidden fruit so irresistible. Such buzzwords as nazi, racist, sexist, homophobe, transphobe, etc. are thrown around with such frequency because they are intended to get an emotional reaction out of people, namely one of disgust and revulsion. Outrage sells in these times. That being the case, it only follows logically that the vast majority of people must reject those attitudes and beliefs, otherwise there would be no rationale behind so vehemently depicting them as negative. Maybe normal adult people are capable of thinking for themselves after all, and deciding what is and is not acceptable in modern society. We are no longer impressionable children, as you were when you unwittingly picked up those kind of views and wrote that essay that your mom scolded you over. I was an outcast as a kid too, and I acted out and developed some pretty fucked up views of the world because of it. I'd like to think I'm over that phase of my life now, and that I can think for myself, thank you very much. So instead of shaming and nannying others, I say it's time to come to the realization that it is not our responsibility to dictate what grown people can and cannot be allowed to hear or see. Put those critical thinking skills to work, rather than succumbing to sensationalism and emotional appeal. Let those who are ignorant and hold these retrograde views preach all they want, and slowly fade into obscurity where those ideas belong. Sunlight is the best disinfectant, after all.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7141184874069158818.post-68185727839726541582017-03-13T13:14:10.729-05:002017-03-13T13:14:10.729-05:00Fuck me this might be the best thing I've read...Fuck me this might be the best thing I've read on the internet so far into this year. Personally, I wholeheartedly agree with the basic principles that antifa and like minded groups stand for, but at the same time, I find their rhetoric and tactics to be problematic, fairly violent, and most importantly, unethical: If you have no right to take away someone's watch because it's his since he paid money for it, then by the same logic, you have no right to take away someone's show because it's his since he paid money for it. once these groups start comprehending the logic behind this basic moral principle they'll come to see how irritating and even despotic their actions are.
Going on internet which hunts after allegedly racist bands doesn't help. if someone likes something and you tell him that it sucks, then it's only natural that he'll lash out against you, this is psychology 101 and this is exactly what happened with metal sucks when they bashed a band that had thousands of fans across the globe just to find that these fans would rather fight back than be forced into feeling guilty for enjoying what they like listening to. These witch hunts are counterproductive and they only serve to agitate people.
Is there a racism problem in heavy metal? I would say that there might be albeit it's not as acute as some people would like it to be. I'm 100% sure that Lemmy, Dimebag and Jeff Hanneman had their own racist tendencies, but as far as i know, they had kept these sentiments to themselves, and based on this fact, I'm not going to scold those who enjoy their music. And besides, even if we were to admit that racist enclaves exist in the heavy metal scene (and they do), then it's only natural in a scene as huge and vibrant to find people from all the ranges within he political spectrum. If anything, this is a testimony to the diversity and expansiveness of heavy metal culture.
based on my observances, I believe that most metalheads lean to the left. However, if these people feel that they are being berated for enjoying a certain band or two, then it's the left's fault -and their fault alone- if these people actually turn into Paul Joseph Watson dick sucking haters. This is how that orange clown got into office, and this is how a new generation of young people is being brainwashed into believing that it's okay to blame brown skinned people for their problems.
Online prosecution needs to stop. live and let live. If you think someone's racist, then tell them to their face why you disagree with their beliefs. If you cannot do that politely and in a civil manner, then fuck off back to what you understand best and leave politics to those who are actually well versed in it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7141184874069158818.post-73520643281011462702017-03-10T13:57:27.907-06:002017-03-10T13:57:27.907-06:00Welp, I just finished reading this, but before I c...Welp, I just finished reading this, but before I can get in depth, I'll put these out of the way so I don't confuse some folks (incoming shitty opinions!)

1. I do too dislike neo-Nazis. I always picture them as pussy-ass edgelords with nothing to go for in life aside than saying xenophobic shit for either shock value or out of genuine hate (it could be both, I dunno). Most of these guys would most likely piss and shit themselves if they were in the face of someone bigger than they are, like a big hulking Luke Cage-ish guy.

2. Neo-Nazi metal, especially NSBM (national socialist black metal), is pretty fucking funny if you think about it. Sure, the lyrics are horrible and all but how they are made is just comedy gold. Most of them use drum machines and very sloppy guitars, structure, rhythm patters and vocals that it sounds like you're composing music for some low budget Hanna-Barbera show. The thing is that it stops being funny when you realize all the lyrics are the same poorly written shit.

Now, for the article. The A.V. Club is seriously losing some of it's credibility lately, and now with this new article, I can see why some people would most likely dump it and call it a day. I agree that the whole article is promoting some bullshit witch hunt. Accusing someone like Charlie Fell of homophobia when he's expressing his own insecurities through art is really dumb. It's gotten to the point where anyone doing something remotely offensive, someone labels the other as a dang ol' dirty neo-Nazi, even if they done nothing wrong at all in their past lives, which is incredibly infuriating. Have they seen an actual neo-Nazi or a KKK member?

But, to be honest, there are non neo-Nazi members in rock and metal that do say a lot of racist and bigoted shit as well, and they can be lumped as neo-Nazis, even if they don't seem to follow how they are and all. Just look at Ted Nugent for instance. I guess the feeling the article was trying to express was to target supposedly xenophobic metal, but label it as neo-Nazi shit just to get more emotions riled up and commence into some witch hunt. Man, the nerve of these fucking people.

Dilbertnoreply@blogger.com
