Jewish Juice - In Memore

Those goofy Nazis

What a delightful name! Jewish Juice is one of those things that, as a metalhead, I find hard to turn away from. When presented with a name as provocative, in-your-face, and over-the-top as this one, you can not pay me not to be intrigued. Did this shock value work positively for the band? If you were to ask me, I'd say yes. Because underneath the rather typical exterior of NSBM tomfoolery, there is some solid Black Metal, and I probably never would have found it without the ridiculous moniker.

Aesthetics aside, the four tracks on In Memore are nothing if not solid, heavy, Black Metal. The album starts with the mid-paced war march of "Brucia", and it sets the tone for what the rest of the demo will bring rather well. I find that one of the main strengths of the album is the variety, virtually every song has something that will make it stand out in a way. The a capella intro to "Crystal's Night", the marching snare of "Brucia", the semi-punk riff in "Totenkopf"... everything has something. The flaw in this is that the weaknesses are more exposed in a way, and dips in quality hurt a four song demo much more than a 10 song full-length. The main beef is with the quasi title track, "In Memory", which just drones on and on in the background with an annoying repetition. Thankfully, frequent tempo shifts grace the remaining three songs, which helps keep them fresh and interesting. This isn't anything terribly innovative, but it gets the job done as a Black Metal album.

RATING - 74%
